I am studying to be a life coach. Often people will ask, "what is a life coach?"
A life coach facilitates positive change by improving thinking. I came across David Rock’s interview with Jeffrey M. Schwartz, M.D., A Brain-Based Approach to Coaching, www.workplacecoaching.com and it really resonated with me. It is very exciting that recent neuroscience findings provide an explanation of how and why our brains need coaches. Below if a very brief summary:

1. Our brain thinks in mind maps. Each mind map is a series of connections which represent a habit or thought form. Often these mind maps can’t connect together. This is when we will feel stuck. For instance, one mind map states it wants to go on vacation while the other states it can’t afford a vacation.
2. Our brain does not make large changes easily. It perceives change as a threat which initiates a “fight or flight” response.
3. Focus/attention is the key to changing the brain. Whatever we focus on will create connections (mind maps). Unfortunately, our brains will automatically think about the past because the connection has already been made. In fact, each time the brain thinks of the past in makes the connection stronger. It takes focus to place your attention on future because the connections have not yet been made. It is often said that attention is the active ingredient in coaching.
4. Our brains love certainty and safety. The brain has to feel safe in order to make change.
5. Insight is the key to change. Prior to insight reflection must take place. Action is difficult to take until we have an insight.
6. Follow up: The charge we receive from our insight does not last long so follow up is important.

Our Brains Need Life Coaches

One example of a coaching session using the brain based approach:
Coaches create a safe compassionate environment for their clients. By asking questions the coach will gently guide their client to have “toward” type thinking instead of “backward” type thinking. “Backward” type thinking addresses the problem. “Toward” type thinking addresses the solution. It is important to note that the coach is not interested in answering the question or telling the client his opinion. He simply acts as a facilitator and observer. Once their client shows a sign of insight (eyes looking up or to the side) quite time is allowed for reflection. This is when an insight will take place. In order to give this new insight proper focus the coach will discuss it, give a writing assignment relating to it and/or ask the client to tell their family and friends about the insight. The quality and duration of focus is imperative to making a new connection (mind map). The coach will then follow up with client to ensure action steps were taken and assist in creating new action steps.

Who am I? Why did I start this blog?

Although I have to be somewhere in 15 minutes, I have a drive to write this post. If I don't do it now I will never do it. At the beginning of the year I started this blog because I love self development and the law of attraction. I have been studying these subjects daily for the past 2 1/2 years. I really wanted to teach others what I have learned. However, I did not commit. My posts are inconsistent. I usually won't publish all the the posts I have saved on draft. Why? Deep down I believe I am not an expert. Deep down I don't believe readers would be interested with what I have to say. I also have a great fear of making myself transparent to all. My studies have changed the person I am. I now have a clear vision of my purpose. It is time for me to "step into it". I am promising myself to post to my blog daily. Trust me I have enough information to post twice a day.

I have always had the ability to see the potential in others. People have always come to me with their problems. I naturally have the ability to shift their perspective. My famous line is, "if I was younger I would become a therapist".

Unfortunately, I have had a harder time seeing my potential. I have always had a low self esteem which contributed to the poor choices I have made. I have also had things happen that were very difficult. I thought I was a victim of my circumstance. When I started my studies and spiritual journey I was very depressed and had little to no self esteem. Currently, I am pursuing my dreams by taking real action. Everyday I consciously make progress. I see a very bright future! Although I am still a work in progress (making quantum leaps), I feel I have gained the life experience and knowledge to help others. I am so excited to say I am studying to be a life coach with Ted McGrath.

I just received an email from a friend that was in a very low place. She is losing her job and has real medical issues. After I read my response I realized that I am qualified to help others in need. I was shocked at what I wrote. Since I am not a certified coach YET, I will start here with a daily post.

Your desire (thought form) would not resonate with you unless you could achieve it. By simply thinking your desire you have started its creation. By feeling this desire with great enthusiasm and emotion you transfer it to your subconscious. Your desire is now created. Accelerate your desire's manifestation by expecting it. It is now time for you to take inspired action in the direction of your desire.

Tips:

Spend time in contemplation. Silencing the mind will allow inspired action steps to be heard from source.

Visualize you already having your desire with emotion. Being in a state of gratitude will help raise your vibration during your visualization.

Today, March 20, is the most powerful day to set forth your intentions. Write down 3 things you would like to create this year. Read your 3 creations out loud. You will want to focus on each to get a a better understanding of what they mean to you. Go into meditation. Visualize each as you are creating them. You are looking through your third eye onto a "movie screen". Then transfer your vision to a "movie screen" at the back of your brain (back of your neck). Once you see yoiur visions on this "screen", say, "so be it, I will create it". You will do this process for all 3 of your intentions. At this point, you forget "it". Place your written intentions into a safe place or your "intention box" for review at end of year

Thanks to the movie "The Secret", Law of Attraction is a familiar term to most. A simple concept, right? All you need to do is focus on the positives that you want and have in your life so you will attract more of these positives. Unfortunately, it isn't that simple. Don't get me wrong . . . the habit of thinking positive thoughts is a very important first step. There are many more steps.
When my own life became very tough I absorbed myself in any and all materials relating to these laws. I derived the most clarity from Esther and Jerry Hicks (visit Hicks' site here). Abraham, "a group consciousness from the non-physical dimension", speaks through Esther (I know what you are thinking . . . but just give it a chance). Abraham is able to teach us the key universal laws for our happiness and success. He teaches us to live our life purpose (joy). You know you are living your purpose when you feel joy and freedom. He teaches that we are our creators. We create through our thoughts. We are all a part of the "infinite intelligence". The better you feel the more aligned you are with the infinite. However, our human nature does not allow us to easily keep our thoughts on positive aspects. Most find it easier to feel sorry for ourselves and become victims. Abraham provides knowledge and tools for living our life in a joyful way.
I have started this blog because I would like to share the tools that I have learned. I must say that they have really helped. Everyday I will post a new knowledge or tip to help you become the person you want to be.
